The Modern Greek History in Thassos begins with the revolution of Thassos that began in 1821 along with many other parts of Greece.

The island's greek president Hatzigiorgis Metaxas was the leader of the revolutionary movement. The Turks were defeated in a battle in Potos and went to Kavala.

During the Greek revolution Thassos helped a lot. It is estimated that more than 1000 greek people were cruelly butchered, others were tortured and many lost their properties.

When the viceroy of Egypt changed and in Mehmed's Ali position came Ampas Hilmi Passa it was also the time in history of the Neoturks and the proclamation of the Turkish constitution.

They removed the privileges from Thassos until the Balkan wars. Thassos was liberated by the Greek Army and fleet with the admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis. One year later it was formally incorporated to the Greek State. According to the modern Greek history in Thassos After the island's liberation Constantine Mellas, brother of the famous Greek fighter of Macedonia Pavlos Mellas, is appointed as a temporary comander. During the period 1920-1940 lots of immigrants came from Asia Minor and Thrace. 1922 was the year of a big destruction by the Turks in Asia Minor. the city of Smyrna was burnt, lots of the Greek inhabitants were violently killed and the ones that managed to survive came over in Greece. At the 2nd World War as modern history tells us Thassos was first occupied by the Germans who then passed the island to the Bulgarians. The Bulgarian army as well as their authorities were very cruel to the Greeks. Eventually Greece was free in 1945. Nowadays, Thassos is a wonderful destination for travellers from all over the world. Roads and hotels of all types have being built. The island is connected with the mainland with ferry boats and hydrofoils. Step by step Thassos develops economically and once again is transformed into the glorious land that so many people have described it to be.
