History of Modern Greece
in Thassos

Turkish Occupation

The history of modern Greece in Thassos was laid back beacuse of the Turkish occupation. Firstly, Constantinople was occupied by the Turks in 1453 and two years later Mohamed II organized an expedition against the territories of the peninsula of Aenos and occupied Thassos in 1455.

In 1457 of the history of Greece a crusade is called by Pope Kallistos the 3rd and the Venetians occupied the island from the Turks. Two years later in Greece though in 1459 the sultan reoccupied Thassos and sent most of the inhabitants to Constantinople abandoning the island.

In 1466 of history Thassos as well as the islands Samothraci and Imvros were conquered by the Venetians and remained under their dominance until 1479 when the island passed to the Turks one more time and became part of the Ottoman Empire.

At the beginning of the 18th century before the beginning of the history of modern Greece the inhabitants of Thassos in order to protect themselves from the pirates transferred the coastal villages to mountainous areas that were hard to be seen from the sea. This is how villages such as Theologos and Panagia were created. In the coasts remained the "viglaria", guardposts that sent warning signs with fires.

According to history in 1770 the Russians defeated the Turks in a sea fight in Tsesme and Thassos support to Russia was very important. The Russians came to Thassos and used the island's timper to repair their ships.

It is said that unless they had this contribution from the Thassians they wouldn't have been able to stay in the Aegean for more than a year. In "Orlofika" it is referred that the Russians cut 17000 trees in order to secure their fleet.

In 1774 in Greece, after the capitulation between the Turks and the Russians the island passed to the Sultan who treated the inhabitants with cruelty and rage. By the end of the 18th century only about 2500 inhabitants were left on Thassos who were also living in fear of the pirates.
