Greek Ancient History of
Thassos

Ancient Era: page 2

Greek Ancient History of Thassos and the power and influence of the island increases.

The economic relations between other places is also seen by coins representing Satyr and the Nymphs which were widely spread in many parts of ancient Greece. Among the findings of history during that era are great works of architecture, sculpture, ceramics and metalworking.

Thassos still has relationships with Paros since they have the same worships and calendar.

In Greek Ancient History the wealth of Thassos was such that a great city wall of 4km perimeter was built surrounding the part which was inhabited. On its gates there were carved sculptures. But it was the Thassians that had to knock it down when Dareios the King of persia along with his general Mardonios invaded Thassos and the parts of ancient Thrace.

The Persians left the Aegean sea at about 480 and 478 BC. That was the time that the 1st Athenian Confederacy was made and Thassos not only joined the confederacy but also sent thirty ships during 477 BC. A few years later in 465 BC the Athenian general Kimon started to conquer members of the greek confederacy like Hion, the seaport of Amphipolis and Thassos.

The Thassians, as history tells us, were again forced to destroy the city wall and also give their ships, relinquish their colonies and pay an annual tax. Until 412-411 BC the city was almost unfortified but at that time the wall was rebuilt.

Thassos was made a base for the military during the first years of the Peloponnesian war. However the Thassians rebelled and asked for help from Sparta in 411 BC.

That was the time during this ancient era when the mutiny of the 400 broke and the oligarchic group removed Thassos from the Athenian occupation. The Thassians at that time freed their fleet and made a Peloponesian squadron that has remained well-known throughout history. Thassos then had a difficult period for ten years.

In 407 BC the Thassians were forced to acknowledge the domination of Athens. In 403 BC Lyssandros king of Sparta occupied the island and was cruel to the Thassians but later the Athenians reoccupied Thassos. It was a time of greek civil wars and mutinies in Thassos.

In the beginning of the 4th century after a period of conflicts and destructions Thassos is trying to restore relationships with Neapolis of Delphi and ask for assistance from Paros. Then Thassos enters a period of reorganization; architecture, administration, the wall and the market. Both the political and commercial life are "restored".

In 387 BC the Antalkidios Peace is signed. Thassos has regained its relation with Paros and after 377 BC joins the 2nd Athenian Confederacy. In 360 Kallistratos ,a rhetorian, who was exiled from Athens, co-establishes with the Thassians the town of Krinides near the greek Mount Pageon. For history it is of real "value" to say that Thassians coins were spread at the peninsula of Aimos showing the economic influence of Thassos.
