Greece History Time Line

Byzantine Period

Greece History Time Line in Thassos goes many years back in history.

The Byzantine Period has a lot to do with Cristianity. Christianity came to this island of Greece in 52 AD when the Apostle Paul traveled from Troy in Asia Minor to Neapolis - today Kavala. Christianity was spread fast; nontheless the authorities of Thassos tried not to reveal it to Rome so as not to create conflicts with them and with their pagan religion.

Later on in the beginning of the Byzantine years many Churches were built.

In the same century in history the first invasions in Thassos started to take place. The first who invaded and occupied the island were the Avars at the reign of Justinian. They remained in Thassos until 600 AD when Herakleios got it back.

From then on incidents can be seen in a better Greece History Time Line.

In 765 AD the island was invaded by Slav pirates and they expelled most of the inhabitants. Constantine Copronymus a byzantine emperor known for being involved in the Iconomachy tried to recapture the island but since he was not succesful he tried to negotiate with the pirates.

In 904 AD the Saracens pirates after occuping Crete and destroying Thessalonika arrived in Thassos. Ships and siege engines were built and they sold many as slaves. In 961 AD Thassos is again part of the Byzantine.

In 1204 AD Thassos was given to Enrico Dandolo doge of Venice. Under the venetian rule reconstructions were made in the city and city walls and at the same time a palace was built on the acropolis.

In 1261 AD Thassos is again in the Byzantine state by the efforts of the emperor Michael Palaiologos who reoccupied Constantinople. Moving on to 1306 AD Thassos was ruled by Tidedias Zacharias but in the beginning of 13th century St John knights occupied it and then the Venetians, Spaniards and others.

In 1315 AD Andronicus II tried to remove the island from the Calatans but not succesfully. Thassos by the end of the Byzantine until 1455 AD was ruled by the Gatelouzzi family when then the Turks invaded and occupied it.
