Brief History of Greece
in Thassos

Egyptian Occupation

A Brief History of Greece in Thassos is really worth a study since Thassos played a key role in Greek History.

In 1813 Thassos is given as a reward to Egypt's viceroy/vizier Mehmed Ali. He was very indulgent to the people as he was born in Kavala and raised in Thassos with Greeks. It was a kind of a relief for the island's inhabitants after all they had undergone.

Mehmed Ali admitted the establishment of a constitution with communal freedoms which lasted until 1874.

He was of some help on the island's inhabitants after the series of maltretments they had suffered.

The person in charge of every community was the president of the dignitaries called "tsormpatzis" and the "tsormpatzis" of all villages elected the "bahtormpazi", president of the whole island and they all gave account to the Egyptian authorities.
