Ancient History of Greece
in Thassos

Hellenistic Era

In the ancient history of Greece Thassos as a part of the 2nd Athenian Confederacy in 377 BC managed to expand its influence in the main land.

Parts of it were restored particularly at the place where the wall separated the city from the harbor and all were enforced with towers.

In 357 or 340 however the Greek King Philipp of Macedonia expands and ancient Thassos under his political authority now mantains part of its autonomy in history.

Changes start taking place on the island. The commercial centre is being rearranged between the port and the beginning of the hills. Around it is a big street which leads from the sanctuary Artemisio to the one called Herakleion.

A lot of work was done during this era concerning the wall of the city.

According to the history of Greece it is a time of organization and development specifically concerning the construction of the city.

At that era in Greece new wall gates were opened, sanctuaries such as Artemisio, Evraiokastro and Herakleion were reconstructed and rearranged. At the same time new ones such as Dionisio and Poseidponio were built.
